Great session today
I had one of those days where your body just kicked out more power than you are used to.
Today was the first day that I swam and cycled back to back. Furthermore, I swam and cycle the racing distances for next Saturday. My first sprint triathlon!
The swim was over before I knew it and I hardly felt tired. Given a mule could have beaten me, but I’ve never done 600m before.
The cycle was insane. I could feel that my legs weren’t too fresh after the swim, but I burned up and down the hills, over ditches and around corners. I love mountain biking!
I felt good enough to do a 5-10km run afterwards too. So I figure I should be fine for the sprint. Actually thinking of doing the full length one, but I think doubling each leg would be just a bit too rough for me.

What’s your plan this week? Are you going to take it easy in prep for your race? Or are you going to “train through”?

I was planning on continuing with training until Wednesday. The race is on Sunday, so I should have fully recovered by then. Perhaps a short run/cycle on Saturday, but I haven’t really planned it too much.
Any pointers?

Well… I guess it depends on the race distance, your fitness level (at that distance) and your goals.
I’m sure, no matter what you’ll do, you’ll finish the race, and set a new PR (since it’s your first race, that’s a guarantee.
)
I’ve had times when I said, oh, I don’t care about this race, and so I will just treat the race as if it was a workout… I still go hard during the race, but the day before or day after I treat like any other day. I’ve even had days where I did a sprint race in the morning… and then a long run in the afternoon.
But, I’ve also made a big mistake doing this. I had one sprint distance triathlon the day after a century ride. I did the century ride at race pace 20mph+ average… and then had a disastrous sprint triathlon the next day… I was wiped out.
Based on what I think your fitness level is… (you mentioned you’ve been doing a lot of mountain biking the last couple years) I’d suggest you give yourself a couple days off before the race. You can probably do a short run on Thursday, then some light spinning on friday and even Saturday. But keep it low effort and short. Or totally take the day off on Friday, and then a light spin on Saturday.
You won’t improve your fitness between now and Sunday… so really it’s just about keeping your body loose and mind clear.
One other thing you could do is to set up your gear in a mock transition area and practice your transition routine. That’s a great way to spend taper days.
Good luck!

Thanks for the pointers / ideas. Yeah, I feel quite good, so I should finish with a relative decent time. Hope to be somewhere in the middle of the bunch.
I think I’ll definitely need to do a mock transition. I’m so slow at the moment. Took me 10mins just to get from the swimming pool onto the bike.
