Comfortable run

Another one of those days… you know you should go running, but deep down you know it’s not going to happen. 5minutes before the ’supposed run’ I decided to toughen the hell up and hit the road. Quite glad I did too. I had a great run. Didn’t push too hard, since I have the MTB race this Saturday. I want the legs to be fresh. Can’t wait! It’s going to be a goody.

Recovery reserve ride

I was still a bit stiff from Saturday’s ride and decided to keep a moderate pace today.

Since it’s a public holiday in SA, I decided to visit my parents over the weekend. There is a small nature reserve nearby, with a few animals. Love riding here. Saw a few small critters, but no big game today.

Winter is definitely here and it’s getting harder to get out of bed. I need to get some better gear for the cold. I have a cycling jersey thingy, but only cycling shorts. Come to think of it, I also have leg warmers, but they never worked well. Always kept slipping off. My new cycling shorts have a taut elastic strip though, so maybe they’ll hold.

Getting there

I’ve been pigging out since I last weighed myself. Weighed myself today and I was at 70.2kg. A bit better, but I’m still looking like starving Marvin. I’ll try to get it up to 72-73 and try to keep it there.

Burning my mountain bike

I pushed the up-hills real hard today. I was standing up on anything greater than a 3% incline. I don’t really enjoy killing myself like this, but it felt pretty good afterwards. Man, I burned up those hills! A total ascent of 486m. Not bad.

Unfortunately I had some puncture issues along the way and spent around 30mins to get the tubeless tire to seal again. It went quite flat and wouldn’t seal. So I turned back home, pumping it ever kilometre or so. After 3 stops it seemed to have sealed again, so again I turned around to continue with my workout. I stopped another 4 times, each time increasing the tire pressure until it reached the correct bar. A bit frustrating, but I guess it comes with the territory. Quite pleased with the rest of the workout though.

The race I’m doing on Saturday has a total ascent of around 1000-1200m. The race distance 65km. Can’t wait!!

Red wine run

I had dinner with friends last night and ended up having too many glasses of wine. Woke up with a lovely headache, which stayed with me during the day. I didn’t want to back out of the scheduled trail run with my AR buddy, so I downed enough water during the day to create a small rain forest in the middle east.

The run was tough. We pushed ourselves a bit, but ended up taking a wrong turn and did only 4km. Good thing too. I might have died if we ran any further.

Next time I’ll stick to water and juice… it was  a pretty good dinner party though.

Taking it easy

I got my flue shots yesterday and was told to stay off the bike for two days! Bleh. I’ve got a race next week, so against my better judgement I went for a cycle this afternoon… Technically it’s 1.5 days since the shot and I took it easy. I can get a HR of 136 merely by playing guitar hero. So I should be fine.

I kicked the bike into its highest gear and watched the minutes fly by. Fun ride, but it’s starting to get chilly.

Great run

Had a great trail run with my AR buddy Cobus today. Those hills are getting easier, but they’re still tough! I love the parts through the woods and the river crossings. I’m really enjoying these trails.

For the next two weeks, I need to focus on my mountain biking training. I have a mountain biking race the 3rd of May 2008 and I’m a bit rusty.

Niece birthday cycle

I cycled to my niece’s 4th birthday party, which is around 30km from my place. It’s a pretty straight route, but there were some monster hill climbs. Ended up with a total ascent of 750m. I even managed to hit a sweet twisty single track.

The party itself was brilliant. Complete chaos. 15 little girls running around with puppies, Barbie’s, balloons and candy. And when they weren’t running they were jumping up and down the jumping castle. Chaos, but it was great fun!

5k trail run

Did a 5k trail run after work. Cobus couldn’t make it, so I went alone. Perhaps not the safest thing to do in SA, but I had my pepper spray with me. For what it’s worth.

The 170m ascent was tough as always, but the view makes up for the effort. A very enjoyable run in the end.

2,000 meter swim! Oooh yeah!

I did my first 2k swim! Yeah!

It was an easy swim. I didn’t kill myself. I took a bit of a break after the first 1000m. I wasn’t that tired, but felt the need to hydrate (of all things). I had a splitting headache too. It might be that my breaths are too big. I took smaller breaths on the second 1000m and everything was ok. I also swam 1 minute quicker on the final 1000.

The best thing is the way I feel at the moment. I feel like anything is within my grasp. If you just work hard, you’ll be able to reach your dreams… hehe. That enough cheeze for you?! But seriously, I feel something along those lines. NowI only need to figure out what my dreams are…
