Ups and downs in Mozambique

Our house in MozambiqueI went for a trip to Mozambique last week. We’re building a house there and I had to take more material for the building contractor.

Unfortunately I ended up loosing my friends’ passports! Big mistake! It fell out of the car at a stop on the way there. Man, what an idiot!?

What was supposed to be a rather relaxing “business trip”, ended up being a bit of a stressful nightmare. I had difficulty with the officials, whom were set out to make life hard for you. The most unpleasant bunch of people you’ll ever meet. It took me four days to get a statement out of them, which merely states that I’ve lost the passports. In SA that takes around 30 mins. That’s Africa for you.

Sunset in MozambiqueLuckily I did get my feet in the sand a few times. I did a 10km run on the beach and learned to surf! Quite pleased with that. Other than those two outings, my training programme took a nose dive and I didn’t get round to half the training I was planning on. I’ll try to get it back on track this week, but the sudden arrival of winter is not helping much.

Too skinny

I weighed myself last night, and I came in at 68.9kg! That’s a BMI of 19.7, which is still within the normal range of 18.5-25. But I reckon that’s way too skinny. I need to beef up a bit.

It’s just hard gaining weight when you’re doing cardiovascular exercises. I’m not really that into weight training. Perhaps I should give that aspect a bit more attention. Especially with winter approaching.

Hill climbs with my work’s running club

I went for a run with my work’s running club. Our campus is built around a hill, so we had plenty of up- and downhills to play with.

I wanted to do an 8km, but lost sight of front runners and ditched the back-markers, so I ended up doing my own loop of 6km. I’ll stick with the quicker guys next time.

Surf’s up

Surfing in MozambiqueI learned to surf today. It was my first time on a surfboard and I was quite stoked that I managed to stand up a few times. Everyone always goes on about how difficult it is and how they only managed to almost get up once during their first try. Perhaps I was just lucky, but it was actually quite easy. Paddle, catch the wave, get on your knees, stand up. Easy!

I must have been in the water for over 3 hours. Great fun! I wish I lived near the ocean. I’d like totally be an awesome surfer, dude.

Beach running

I did a beach run in Mozambique. The total distance on the beach was around 10km and I tried to keep on the wet sand. The soft sand is just too frustrating.

I enjoyed  seeing the sun rise over the ocean. Quite a treat.

Running in the rain

I had a pretty good run today. It started raining halfway through my session. It was a very refreshing drizzle and one couldn’t ask for better conditions. Unfortunately there was also thunder around, so I was running from tree to tree. Hehe, it must have looked pretty strange.

Running technique - footstrike position

I’ve been trying to change my footstriking position over the last two months so that I land on the mid-foot rather on the heal. It just seemed logical that there would be less impact on my knees, but I had no proof to back this up.

I came across this post by Dr. Ross Tucker that discuss this issue. It is a very interesting read.

The conclusion:

“There is no evidence that heel-strikers are injured more, no evidence that mid-foot runners are faster and perform better than heel-strikers, and so the ultimate question is:

Why would you want to change your foot landing to begin with? Science has little to offer you in support of this. And so my advice … is to forget about the possibility that you’re landing “wrongly”, and just let your feet land where, and how they land, and worry about all the other things you can when you run!

If there is one thing you change in your running, don’t focus on your footstrike, but rather on WHERE your feet land relative to your body. Because if you are over-reaching and throwing your foot out in front of you, that’s a problem, but what happens when the rubber meets the road is less relevant!”

A very interesting read and conclusion. Now what is the best position for your feet to land relative to your body?

High cadence

I did a high cadence routine today. I tried to keep it steady at around 90-100. My cadence sensor magnet fell of a few months ago, so it’s tricky to judge exactly how fast I was actually spinning. I don’t think it was far off though.
