AR: MTB leg

Our MTB leg was a bit disappointing… well disappointing at first. The terrain was rubbish for the first 4-5km. We had to go up very ‘technical’ hills (aka crappy terrain with WAY too many rocks) were the inclines were between 20-25%. That’s insane if you ask me. I managed to ride 2 of the 8 odd hills, but had to push my bike up the others. Really did not enjoy that at all. Didn’t see anyone else (other than Gert) who was able to ride those.

Then just as we reached the end of the ‘technical’ section, Cobus’ derailer broke off. Clean break. We spent around 30mins trying to turn his bike into a fixie. We couldn’t get him going an unfortunately he had to walk back to the start. Gert and I decided to press on though.
The rest of the MTB section was brilliant. Some twisty downhills with a bit of gravel. I managed to get the end out a couple of times. The flat sections was also great and at times we averaged around 35km/h.

We made up a lot of places but lost so much time that our total ride time was around 1:34:00. (I logged 1:01:30, purely because I want to keep track of how much time I actually spent exercising).

AR: Trail run and obstacle course

The first leg of our adventure race was a short trail run and an obstacle course. The run was quite cool. We crossed a river at the beginning and it was quite fun thundering through the shallow water. Our feet were a bit wet for the first kilometre, but it was well worth it.

We gunned it after the river crossing, trying to make up a few places as not to get in stuck in queues at the obstacle course. It worked quite well and we missed most of the rush. The teams were split up, with one half climbing over a high wooden structure and the other balancing over a few logs and crawling through a tunnel. I was feeling very weak in the run and we took the pace down a bit on our way back to the transition.

Pre-race trail run

I did a short run with my racing partners for Saturday’s adventure race. I’m feeling real tired this week. Not sure why. I’ve been eating well, sleeping A LOT and not working too hard. Strange.

Daily cycling commute

I started commuting to work today. Reduce that carbon footprint and also safe on petrol.

My transitions can do with some work though. Hehe. It took me like 20mins to pack my bag. The shower at work another 15mins. The change back into my cycling gear around 5-10mins and the shower back home another 10mins.

Perhaps I should keep as much stuff as possible at work, such as a towel, shower gel etc. Not to sure if keeping clothes there is taking it to far. I don’t want it to look like I’m sleeping under my table.

Tomorrow I’m meeting Cobus for a trail run again. Think I’d have to take the car. Don’t want to start the run with tired legs. My knees are quite sore after the weekend’s running, so I hope they’ll be ok tomorrow. I’ve been trying to give them a bit of a rest, but they still hurt quite bad when I get my footing wrong. Oh well, we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.

Half-marathon here I come!

Ok, I decided (with a little persuasion) to do my first half-marathon on the 31th. I’ve already entered, so there’s no backing out now.

The race is being organized by my university’s alumni organization; the Tuks Alumni Legends 2008. What a dramatic name for race!? Reckon I’ll be singing that Chariot’s of Fire song in my head during the race. Hehehe. Tum-tum-tum tu-tuum-tuuum!!

Weight remaining stable

Seems like my weight is remaining stable for now. I’ve got breakfast and lunch sorted, and I’m getting the hang of eating small meals in between the larger meals, but my dinners are a bit of a mess.

Most often I eat pasta and some sort of canned veggies /beans. A bit lame, I know, but I’m a lazy bachelor. I eat out (at parents or with friends) a few times per week and tend to eat a bit too much. So I’d like to work on my diet and the amount I eat at dinner. I think I’m doing better than most people, but it’s far from optimal.

Trail run race

I did the Salomon Introductory Trail Run at Derdepoort, Pretoria this morning. It is only an introduction to a more formal Trail Running series. The race was set in a recreational area and a section went through some agricultural fields. A pretty cool race. We got to run up some rocky hills and crossed a stream or two. I think the series would be even better!

I burned it a bit and set a personal best over 10km (well almost 10k) and it was a bit of an off-road run too. I think my average heart rate shows that I ran slightly above my comfortable pace.

Time to do a half-marathon, or not

I’ve been running since December and now reckon it’s time to do a half-marathon. Thing is, my May is already so packed with events, I wouldn’t be able to fit one in now. Furthermore, the Comrades (89km / 56 mile internationally renowned race) is being held on the 15th, so the entire SA running calendar grinds to a halt for this event.

It looks like I’ll have to postpone my half-marathon until 12th July for a race at the Voortrekker Monument. That one should be a goody.
