More encouragement

After things went so well with my knees over the weekend, I decided to join my company’s running club again. I only did the 4km and I was pretty much crawling along, but luckily the knees felt ok. Not great, but I reckon things will be back to normal in a week or two.

Encouraging signs

My knees were quite sore after Sunday’s ride so I decided to see a specialist. We took xrays and all seemed to be ok. I was merely struggling with a bit of inflammation in my knees. He gave me some kick-ass anti-inflammatory meds and I must say the knees feel much much better.

The doctor also recommended I keep on training as to keep the muscles around the knee nice and strong. No problem with that! I should even continue running, in spite of the impact it has on knees. Whoop whoop!

Following the doctor’s orders, I just went for a quick bike ride and have already scheduled a short running session with my friends on Tuesday. Sweetness. Can’t wait!

Week 3 of the 100 push-ups challenge! Second try…

I repeated week 3 of the push-up challenge, since I didn’t really nail it the first time round. I wouldn’t say I exactly nailed my second attempt, but it went much better. I managed to do honest pushups for the first 3 sets or so, but after that I had to cheat again.

Week 4 is pretty much the same as 3, so I should be on top of it by the end of next week.

Short ride

I didn’t get to cycle this week. I really wanted to get a few short sessions in, but work is quit hectic at the moment.

The knee feels near perfect on the bike, but as soon as I start applying a bit of pressure it starts hurting again. Think I might have to see a specialist soon. Luckily it is winter, so I can afford to rest the knee a bit more.

Week 3 of the 100 push-ups challenge!

I did four sessions this week, with three sets in each. I increased the frequency to see if I was able to better manage the exercises. I reckon it worked ok, but I’m not strong enough to keep up with the programme. I’m definitely strongeer, but I’ll have to cheat in order to do the required amount of push-ups.

I’m going to do week three again and will try to stick to the programme.

  • Date: 07/19/2008
  • Time: 12:00:00
  • Total Time: 00:30:00.00

Oops I missed a day, but today’s session went very well. I was able to do honest push-ups 90% of the time. I did sets of 16, 13, 11, 11 and 20!! 20 push-ups!! The most ever.

First knee test

I went cycling for half an hour this morning. I took a slow pace, because I want to ease my knee back into action. I hope I get it right, because I’ve overcooked it a few times before. I didn’t feel any sharp pains, but I stood-up once and the left knee hurt a bit. It felt like there was still traces of inflammation, but nothing worth stopping for.

When I got off the bike, the knees cracked a bit; similar to someone cracking their knuckles. I once read this happens when the muscles around the join are a bit weak and hence are unable to keep the join in its place. So I reckon I should gradually increase the strength of the muscles without causing further inflammation.

The plan is then to take it real slow for 3-4 weeks, focussing on the frequency rather than training time. I’ll keep on taking anti-inflammatory pills whilst keeping a very close eye on any pain or continued cracking.

Workout:

  • Type: Cycle
  • Date: 07/12/2008
  • Time: 13:00:00
  • Total Time: 00:31:22.00
  • Average Heart rate: 124
  • Calories: 250
  • Distance: 9.15 km
  • Average Speed: 17.5 kmph

Knee update

I’ve been going easy on my knees for the past few weeks. It seems like it is starting to pay-off. Normally I would get a numbed pain while climbing stairs, but I haven’t had any pain in the last two days.

I’m literally pulling out all the stops. I’m icing, stretching, resting and doing very light strengthening exercises. If progress is still on the up by Saturday, I’ll start doing slow and short cycling and running/walking bits.

I find this recovery process frustratingly slow, but what can you do. I guess my body just needs to be eased into exercise rather than being pushed hard… not that I was pushing that hard.

For anyone struggling with runner’s knee, I’ll recommend you start with these two articles on Time-To-Run and AAOS. From there, one can search for more information regarding stretching, strengthening exercises, etc…
