Heavy

Don’t know if I’m retaining water after the race, but I weighed in at 78.6 kg which is the most I’ve every weighed! I’m not even eating that much and I’m definitely burning more fat than I’m putting on, so it must be muscle. Whoopa! The only downside is that I have to get all the extra weight up those ascents. I’m actually 10kg’s more than I was last year this time. Insane. My weight has never flucuated more than 2-3 kgs.

Subaru Sabie Classic 2009

I completed my 100km 2300m ascent race yesterday. And it’s a friggin miracle too. I was waaaaay to unfit for this monster of a race and it was a huge mental battle just to get through it. I missed the cut-off, so technically I can’t claim to have finished the race, but I covered the 100km so who cares. I finished.

A huge race with too many stories. Luckily I found time in my 9 odd hours of ‘racing’ to take a few photos. Here are some pics worth a thousand:

View from the top.

And to the left.

Cycling through the forest, or was I walking…

Now that’s what I call a sock tan! Dirt style.

Hill climbs mtb ride

Possibly my second last session before the weekend’s 100km mountain bike race. I decided to do a longish ride to spend some time in the saddle and to do a bit of hill-climbing. I cycled over to the Groenkloof nature reserve and cycled up a few hills.

Also came across this sunset with a few zebras in the front. Incredible!

My phone camera is rubbish, so I enhanced it somewhat.

Trail run in Cape Town

I was in the mother city over the weekend and decided to do a short run with quite a bit of hill climbing. I ran half-way up Signal Hill and decided that I might as well just run all the way to the top of Lion’s Head. It was a great run, with cold air in the hot sun. The 600m ascent slowed me down a lot, but I had the time of my life!

Here’s the route (with Table Mountain in the background) and a photo from top.

Workout:

  • Type: Run
  • Date: 02/13/2009
  • Time: 08:00:00
  • Total Time: 1:51:26.00
  • Average Heart rate: 160
  • Calories: 1193
  • Distance: 10.62 km
  • Average Pace: 10:29.37/km
  • Ascent: 624 m

Hill-climbs; not a fan

My racing calendar is a bit cramped. I’m doing the 100km Sabie Classic next weekend and I seriously need to work on my hill-climbing, since that’s pretty much all you’ll be doing during that race. A total ascent of 2.3km. Crazy. Here’s the race profile:

So I cycled to the nearest hill, which has a total ascent of around 100m and went up it three times. The legs are still a bit stiff from the weekend’s tri, so I didn’t go out too hard.

I’m also away over the weekend, which makes it tricky to clock time on the bike. Here’s a view from the top of the hill:

Workout:

  • Type: Cycle
  • Date: 02/11/2009
  • Time: 07:30:00
  • Total Time: 1:08:50.00
  • Average Heart rate: 144
  • Calories: 508
  • Distance: 15.41 km
  • Average Speed: 13.43 kmph
  • Ascent: 270 m
  • Average Cadence: 78

Jozi triathlon race report

Did my first Olympic distance tri this weekend. It went very well. I did it with a friend and it was nice to have a bit of company on the course. I only wanted to finish the race, but managed to do a decent (for me) time too. The results aren’t out yet and my personal timing wasn’t spot on, but it should be around 3:10-3:15. Given that this was on a mtb, I’m quite pleased.

The swim was much easier than my XTERRA swim. I managed a good rythm most of the time. I also swam a lot straighter. Not really sure why, because I still found it easier to breathe on my dominant arm stroke. I forgot to wear a watch, but my guess is that I did a 32-34min swim. The girls started 5mins after us, so I took my time in T1 in order to cycle with Alet. She did a 28-29min swim, so I didn’t really have to wait much.

The cycle was quite easy. Alet dropped me like after 2kms. Darnit! Lol, I’m too competitive or perhaps too chauvinistic, but I don’t like getting my butt kicked by girls. The cycle was actually quite boring, but I just zoned-out and it was over before I realized.

This time Alet waited for me at T2. Think she was around 5mins ahead of me. We started the run together, but the pace was a bit too fast for me. My HR was around 178, so I took it down to 172 and things felt better. Think I finished around 8mins after her.

Quite pleased with the race and I never dreamed of doing it close-ish to 3hrs. Also very happy with my eathing and hydration. I nailed it on this one. Next goal: half-ironman.
