Lakenvlei adventure race

I did an adventure race on Saturday and it was (as usual) the most fun an adult can have. I love these races. Reckon it’s time for a looooong AR.

I met my team mate Eric through the Dark-n-Dirty group. These guys do night rides every Thursday and I’ve been out with them a few times.

We arrived at the Lakenvlei Forest Lodge around 8am and were welcomed by 11 degree (51F) weather. The sun made quick work of the cold and by the time the race started, it was comfortably warm.

We began with a 5km trail run. Nice and easy running through the pine forests. No killer hills or any other insanities. The best thing about the run was my knee holding up. Hardly had any pain.

The mountain biking section comprised of dirt roads, jeep track and some sweet single track. The first section was 6km (3.75 miles) of rolling hills on dirt roads.

We did a short orienteering section, which was about 2km (1.25 mi) long. Eric has brilliant map reading and navigation skills, so we made up a bit time there. It’s great fun making your own route through the forests and open plains.

We were back on the bikes for a bumpy 5km (3.1 mi) stretch. There was also a newly raked single track where I managed two unplanned ‘dismounts’. The first time, my running shoes got stuck in the front tire and the other time I went to fast into a corner with loose dirt. Luckily I’ve become quite skilful at this sort of thing and I ended up on my feet on both occasions.

The next challenge was to navigate your way through a spiderweb of ropes spun between the trees, while holding onto your team mate. Not the trickiest thing in the world, but for some reason it was great fun.

Back on the bikes to do 8 more kms (5 mi) and back to the lodge.

The final challenge was to grab the nearest canoe, paddle out onto the lake and find one of three ‘hidden’ checkpoints.

What a great mixture of activities and what a great atmosphere! I only wish there was more of these races around here.

Here’s some snaps:

Choose your weapon! We could take our pic of boats for the paddling challenge.

Team Super Sweepers. Who you gonna call?

Single track heaven

El lamo run, el lamo week

Not in the zone this week. Busy with a knee rehab programme of sorts. 5 minutes, three times a week. Increase by 5 mins per week. If pain returns, backtrack.

My bike also has a flat and I might have to replace the tire. Also getting quite chilly, so swimming takes some effort. Really not feeling the training thing at the moment. Or I’m just being a pansy and I should get my crap together.
