Weight remaining stable
Seems like my weight is remaining stable for now. I’ve got breakfast and lunch sorted, and I’m getting the hang of eating small meals in between the larger meals, but my dinners are a bit of a mess.
Most often I eat pasta and some sort of canned veggies /beans. A bit lame, I know, but I’m a lazy bachelor. I eat out (at parents or with friends) a few times per week and tend to eat a bit too much. So I’d like to work on my diet and the amount I eat at dinner. I think I’m doing better than most people, but it’s far from optimal.

Getting there
I’ve been pigging out since I last weighed myself. Weighed myself today and I was at 70.2kg. A bit better, but I’m still looking like starving Marvin. I’ll try to get it up to 72-73 and try to keep it there.

Too skinny
I weighed myself last night, and I came in at 68.9kg! That’s a BMI of 19.7, which is still within the normal range of 18.5-25. But I reckon that’s way too skinny. I need to beef up a bit.
It’s just hard gaining weight when you’re doing cardiovascular exercises. I’m not really that into weight training. Perhaps I should give that aspect a bit more attention. Especially with winter approaching.

Too light
I haven’t really been eating much over the last couple of weeks. It is part of an experiment to see how much food my body needs.
It all started out around October 2006 when I started counting the amount of calories I used/needed. After a quick study, I calculated that I burned around 3000 calories per day. (The average 80kg guy, burns around 2200 when not exercising). This figure seems fine, since I burned around 700-1000 calories on a bike ride, which roughly adds up to the 3000 calories needed.
The part where I loose the plot is the way in which one determines the amount of calories in food. Every type of food has a different calorie count per kilojoule, but I’m lazy and only want an average. Again a Google search showed that 1 cal is roughly equal to 4.2 kJ.
So the bottom line is that I need around 12,000 kJ per day. That seems like an awful lot. Usually for dinner I have some microwave meal that has around 1,500-2,000 kJ. Do I really have to eat the equivalent of 6-8 of these per day? Can’t be. I’ll need to enter Sumo competitions rather than endurance events.
After reading this article by Brad, I decided to see with how little food my body could function normally. I still eat 3 meals per day, with a small snack in between. As Brad suggests, you should be hungry at times which is the case. I have gotten used to it now and I hardly notice it anymore.
Furthermore, I lost 3kg in 2 weeks. My body weight hasn’t fluctuated by more than 2kg’s in the last 2-3 years. I guess this isn’t too healthy and I won’t continue with the experiment much longer. However, I don’t feel much different from before. I don’t feel tired or drained. No headaches or anything. This makes me wonder if I shouldn’t cut my diet down just slightly. Perhaps I’ve been eating a bit too much in the past.
Anyhow, it is just interesting to see what happens when you make small changes to your diet.
