New knees

My operation went well and I’m already walking around like a legend. It’s still early days and I’ll only be able to start training after another week or so. Seeing the physio on Friday and doc on Monday.

Op

I’ve taken the winter off, because my knees are giving me a hard time and it’s been exceptionally cold this year. Training wise, this year is pretty much a write-off and I’ve stopped bothering to post my training sessions.

During this time-off, I’ve continued with the physio treatment, but it hasn’t helped with the sore knees. So I went to see the orthopaedic surgeon on Monday and he recommended I go for surgery. He’s a great doctor and I trust his opinion. He’s been a surgeon for the better part of 20 years. We scheduled the operation for next week Thursday. It’s not a big op and he’s only removing small bumps from the cartilage as well as some inflamed tissue. He reckons my chances for a full recovery are very good. Let’s hope so.

Absence

It’s been quite a while since I blogged on my training. I’ve been struggling with sore knees for a while now and it basically brought my training programme to a standstill. I’ve been going to a physiotherapist for two months now and focussing on the exercises given to me. Nothing worth blogging about really. I still go cycling every once in a while, but running is out. The physio exercises sorted a lot of posture problems, but my knees still hurts when I do anything longer than 1km. Lame.

I’ll start blogging again, once I settle into some sort of rhythm again.

Non-stopper

Did another non-stop swim today. Average pace of 2:09. Not bad. I’m struggling somewhat with keeping my form after a few laps. My breathing is ok, but my legs tend to dip a little deeper and this creates a lot of unwanted drag.

Fighting the weak mind

I go swimming in an open air pool and it’s quite cold out, so it’s real hard to get motivated to go swimming. With it being winter, the sun was also already down by the time I walked out of the office. My mind was going like crazy trying to think of reasons not to go out, but I managed to get over it and had a pretty good swim. The water temperature was actually very comfortable, so hopefully next time those pansy thoughts won’t plague me that much.

I’ve been doing more interval training sessions lately, so I decided to just do a full 1000m without stopping. Just to see if I was still able to swim that far without stopping and also to build a bit of stamina. Things went great and I only had to stop a few times to get back in sync with the other people using the pool. One lap I went out too hard and I stopped for 30seconds, but the rest was fine.

Forest2Falls 2009 MTB Race

I did this race for the fourth time in a row this year. I did a 15km, two 75kms and this 35km. Last year’s 75km was a bit rubbish with all the grass covered roads. So I did the 35km this year and I pumped it! A really great and fun race. I must say that it felt a bit short. I’m doing a 45km at the end of the month and I reckon that distance will be ideal for my current fitness level.

My friends did the 75km and it took them three times longer than the 35, even though their fitness levels are quite higher than mine.

Workout:

  • Type: Cycle
  • Date: 05/02/2009
  • Time: 08:15:00
  • Total Time: 1:59:00.00
  • Calories: 1284
  • Distance: 35 km
  • Average Speed: 17.65 kmph
  • Ascent: 600 m
